Julia Bradbury husband, miracle pregnancies, children's quirky names and Yorkshire roots
Countryfile and Watchdog’s Julia Bradbury has opened up about her breast cancer battle for a new documentary airing on ITV tonight (April 28).
The presenter, best known for her outdoor documentaries, walking through the UK, South Africa, Iceland to name just a few, shared her breast cancer diagnosis last year and has been largely absent from screens after undergoing a mastectomy, just a month after being handed the devastating news.
Her new documentary Julia Bradbury: Breast Cancer and Me will follow her story from emotional video diary entries to navigating having to tell her young children the diagnosis. Speaking on This Morning, Julia told hosts Holly Willoughby and P hillip Schofield : “I didn’t suddenly want to drop off the face of the Earth and not talk about what happened to the lump and mammograms.

“I know that by being open about this, people feel I’m there with them through some of their journeys. It has broken some of the stigmas about breast cancer and talking about it and the impact it has on everybody in your life.”
Much of Julia’s documentary focuses on the reaction from her family and how they all coped during the pandemic.
Who is Julia’s husband and do they have children?
Julia is married to Gerard Cunningham and married in 2000. Living in Rutland and West London, Gerard works in property.
They were both open about Julia’s treatment for endometriosis and the obstacles it posed. They celebrated the news of their first child in 2011, having a son named Zephyrus Cunningham.
It’s not clear why the couple chose the unusual name. Zephyrus can mean ‘a light or west wind’, as well as a type of flower.
It was also used as the title of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ The Zephyr Song back in 2002. At the time of her son’s birth, Julia said her pregnancy was a ‘miracle’ after her endometriosis diagnosis.
She told the Daily Mail: “We didn’t think it would be possible and the pregnancy has been a wonderful surprise for both of us. have endometriosis and honestly wasn’t sure if I would ever realise my ambition to be a mum so to fall pregnant feels like a bit of a miracle.”
In September 2014, the family announced they were expecting again, this time with twins conceived via IVF. Their daughters are called Xanthe and Zena but it’s never been made clear where the couple took the inspiration for their names from.
Yorkshire roots
Julia attended school in Sheffield and speaking to Great British Life back in 2020, she said: “‘in my blood, there’s a northern girl. I love coming back. It makes my heart beat a little bit faster.” Speaking of her career venturing into the outdoor, she told the magazine: ‘It’s all about finding that balance for me.
“When I was about six years old, I started walking with my dad right on the doorstep of Sheffield and it continued into my teenage years. I loved having the contrast of inner-city life in Sheffield and exploring with my dad, and that quality time we had together in the Peak District instilled a love for the outdoors in me.’
She is Vice-President of South Yorkshire’s The Countryside Charity and in 2013 was awarded an honorary doctorate by Sheffield Hallam University.
